How can I help a family member who is heavily involved in alcohol and drug use?

Jesus has the power to break addictions, loosen strongholds and set people free from bondage. He can also heal depression and bring hope to the hopeless. John 8:36 states, "Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed."

Help your loved one understand, those truths. There are a few things that you can do. First of all, pray: "The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much"(James 5:16b). Try your best to live a life that reflects godly principles. It is very powerful when a struggling person recognizes the love of Christ coming through the life of another.

You might also contact a trusted pastor or a godly counselor who can work with you to help your loved one realize that through Christ any addiction or pain can be overcome. The most important thing you can do is share the salvation message, which with it brings a renewed life when we accept Christ as our Savior, and begin to engage in a personal relationship with Him. Pray that God will guide you as you reach out to your hurting, loved one.
