Is the modern celebration of Easter pagan?

"Easter" is derived from "Eastre," the Teutonic goddess of spring and fertility. The timing of the Jewish Passover was celebrated at or near the same time as the spring equinox or this "Eastre" festival. So, as the Gospel was being spread to the pagans, the celebration of Eastre and the celebration of the resurrection became somewhat combined and the Christian celebration adopted the name that the pagans had used for their festival. Then, the Nicene Counsel, in 325, permanently declared the Easter holiday to be celebrated on the first Sunday after the full moon of the March equinox.

We must honor the resurrection of Christ at Easter. Christians have to protect themselves from the pollution of the pagan customs of the world. It is very easy to get swept away by the cute traditions, fresh spring colors, and the hope of summer--but Jesus Christ rose from the dead, defeating the grave, and guaranteeing eternal life to those who believe! That is our hope! Don't allow yourself to get sidetracked from the true meaning of Resurrection Sunday.
