On the cross, Jesus asked God why He had forsaken Him. What did He mean?

In order to fully pay the price for our sins, Jesus had to suffer the full penalty. That included not only physical death, but also spiritual death-separation from His Father. The agony of that separation was likely much more painful to Him than the physical agony He felt. He was both fully God and fully man. The man in Him struggled with the price He had to pay. You see this struggle in Matthew 26:39 when Jesus prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."

Jesus did not want to do what He had come to do; He only wanted to do His Father's will. We, as sinners, owed a huge debt that we could never pay. Jesus owed no debt but paid the price for ours. Friend, if you have never admitted your sin and accepted the gift that Jesus offered to you by giving His life on that cross, don't wait another moment. First John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." That promise is for everyone. All you have to do is receive it.
